Frequently Asked
Questions
Have questions about our balanced dog training or ear posting services in Downey and surrounding cities? Below are answers to the questions we hear most, if you don't see yours, reach out and we'll get you a straight answer.
1
What is balanced dog training?
Balanced dog training combines positive reinforcement with fair, clear correction, rather than relying on one method alone. Instead of only rewarding good behavior and ignoring or redirecting unwanted behavior, balanced training also uses appropriate corrections to help a dog understand what's not acceptable. This mirrors how dogs naturally learn cause and effect, and it's why balanced training tends to produce obedience that holds up in real-world situations, not just inside a controlled training environment.
2
Is balanced dog training safe for my dog?
Yes, when done correctly by an experienced trainer. Balanced training uses tools like prong collars and e-collars as communication tools, not punishment, and they're introduced properly with correct timing, fit, and technique. The goal is always clear, fair communication with your dog, not fear or force. At Alpha Mentality Dog Training, every dog is assessed individually so the training approach matches their temperament and needs, ensuring the process stays safe and effective.
3
What's the difference between balanced training and positive reinforcement only training?
Positive reinforcement only training rewards good behavior but avoids any form of correction for unwanted behavior. It can work well for basic obedience, but it often falls short with real-world distractions, reactivity, or more serious behavioral issues, since the dog is never taught what not to do, only what to do. Balanced training uses both: rewarding good behavior and correcting unwanted behavior fairly and clearly. This gives dogs a complete understanding of expectations, which is why balanced training tends to produce more reliable, lasting results, especially for dogs with reactivity, aggression, or hyperactivity.
4
Do you use e-collars or prong collars on every dog?
No. Every dog is different, and not every dog needs the same tools. We assess each dog individually and choose the right approach and tools based on their temperament, behavior, and training goals. Some dogs progress well with basic obedience alone, while others benefit from prong collars, e-collars, or both to address more significant behavior issues like reactivity or leash pulling. Our programs are structured so dogs typically start with foundational training before advancing to tool-based programs like our Alpha Foundation Formula or Calm, Cool, Collected Transformation.
5
At what age can my dog start training?
Puppies can start as early as a few months old with our Puppy Prevention Program, designed for dogs 4.5 months and younger to build good habits before bad ones take hold. For older puppies and adult dogs, our Core Obedience Program and beyond are available once a dog is ready for more structured, tool-based training. During a consultation, we'll assess your dog's age and temperament to recommend the right starting point.
6
Does ear posting hurt my dog?
Ear posting itself is not a painful procedure when done correctly. Some dogs may experience mild, temporary discomfort or sensitivity right after posting, similar to the feeling of a bandage or wrap, but it should not cause ongoing pain. Proper technique, correct materials, and careful monitoring throughout the healing process are what keep your dog comfortable. This is exactly why experience matters so much with ear posting, done incorrectly, it's more likely to cause discomfort or require redoing the process entirely.
7
How long does ear posting take to heal?
Ears typically heal from the cropping procedure itself in about two to three weeks. The ear posting process that follows, keeping the ears posted so they stand correctly, usually takes about three to four months, depending on the crop size. As a general guideline, most dogs need posting until all of their adult teeth are in, which is typically around six months of age. That said, every dog is different, and healing time can vary based on crop length, ear size, and how each dog's ears respond to posting. During your consultation, we can give you a more specific timeline based on your dog's individual crop and ear type.
8
What breeds need ear posting?
Ear posting is most commonly needed for breeds that get their ears cropped, including Dobermans, Schnauzers, and Cane Corsos, though other breeds may require it as well depending on the crop. After cropping, the ears need to be posted consistently to train the cartilage to stand upright naturally. Without proper posting, cropped ears are more likely to fall, fold incorrectly, or fail to stand at all, regardless of how well the initial crop was done.
