What To Expect When You Start Your Dog's Ear Posting Journey 🐾

So you got your puppy's ears cropped. Congrats, that's step one. But here's what nobody tells you upfront: the crop is just the beginning. The real work is the posting journey, and if you're not mentally prepared for it, you're gonna have a rough time.

Let's break down exactly what you're signing up for.

It's A Process, Not An Event

I need you to hear this clearly. Your dog's ears are not standing up after one or two posting sessions. I don't care what you saw on someone's Instagram reel or what your breeder told you. There is no magic post that makes it happen overnight.

This is a multi month commitment. Depending on your crop size, you're looking at anywhere from a month to four months of consistent posting before those ears hold on their own.

Crop Size Determines Your Timeline

Not all crops are created equal, and your timeline depends heavily on which one your dog got.

Short crop 🔹 Requires the least amount of posting time. Even still, expect at least a month minimum unless you went with a military crop.

Medium crop 🔹 This is your average timeline. Most dogs in this category are posting for a couple months before you see consistent results.

Long crop 🔹 This one requires the most dedication. Long crops have more cartilage and tissue to train, so plan for the longest posting journey of the three.

Most of the dogs we're talking about here, Dobermans and Schnauzers, are typically getting a medium to long crop, or whatever length best fits their head and face structure. We usually start posting once all the adult teeth are in, which lands around six months of age.

Expect The Awkward Phase

Your puppy is going to look a little funny for a while. That's normal. Ears taped up, standing at weird angles, maybe a cone involved. It's part of the process.

And yeah, you're going to get looks. People on the street are going to see the posting setup and assume you did something wrong to your dog. You'll get the judgmental stares, maybe even a comment or two. That's okay. Ignore it. You know what you're doing and why you're doing it. 🙌

Every Dog Handles Posting Differently

Some dogs couldn't care less about the tape and just go about their day. Others act like you committed a crime against them the second that post goes in.

If your dog is on the wild side, here's what you need to have in place:

• Cone of shame may be necessary to stop them from scratching or pawing at the post

• Crate training is non negotiable. This is one of the biggest reasons crate training early pays off

• Limit rough play. If your dog is wrestling or slamming their head around, they can pop the post out or actually injure the ear

• No water. Period. Baths, swimming, even getting caught in the rain needs to be avoided while posted. Water compromises the post and can set you back
